That Time…

Missing a big round yellow thing. Usually floats around in the sky. Answers to “The Sun”. If you see him, tell him it’s fudging July. Yeah, July- the time of year people dwell on Football Manager. It’s around this point people start discussing Football Manager 8, for the mere fact 07 is now officially boring.
I’ll base this ‘article’ on why I know it’s that “time of the year”. Right, so take my current Aston Villa game. Finished the first season with only a few improvements to my starting 11 and managed to win the league. So, start of the second season I improved my squad, but with 24 games gone I’m sitting 6th. I’ve improved a league winning squad and can’t continue my rich form. I can only put this down to one thing, which most of us know as ‘losing’.
Losing is a key word in Football Manager. Some people don’t mind losing because it’s part of the game, others couldn’t give two shits, but then you have people like me who fucking hate it. I despise losing, and what’s worse is the ability to read a win or loss after 20 minutes gone in the game. Everyone can, can’t they? You usually know when you’re going to lose because the opposition score from kick off. I don’t lose often, infact, I draw more then I lose, which is why I probably hate losing. This questions my interest in Football Manager. I don’t remember being this tempermental within the first few months.
Another key feature in Football Manager that I feel like crying when it occurs- Injuries. I don’t get them often because I don’t overwork my team in training, so more often then not they occur whilst playing opponents. You may have noticed that when your player gets injured in a game, he’s usually out for months. You know instantly when a player of yours is injured as the game stops. It’s at this period i think “AH FOR FRIGS SAKE!”- and it’s never your keeper who can easily be replaced, it’s always a key player of your squad who’s rolling around on the floor.
One concrete slap in the face to show you’ve lost interest is when you start losing patience with the media. In the past, I’ve been welcoming with them and replied in every situation. Prior to the matches I would hype my team up by claiming “We can win this one”, but now I just use the default “no comment”, not only prior to the match but even when the media ask me about my own players. I steam through the news pressing the space bar like a demented mad man not taking any care- just skipping to the next match.
I’ll end this “rant” by doing what I do on FM, quit, more often then not when I lose a match. I sometimes plan my night- A nice shower, warm clothes, a cup of coffee and a night in on FM, all well and dandy until I lose. I have to re-write my script then.
